The transport MEC in the Eastern Cape, Xolile Nqatha, has expressed shock over the death of 40 people on the road during this Eastern Weekend. This number is double the recorded road fatalities in the province during last year’s Easter week-end. Driving drunk was pegged as one of the big causes of crashes this past week-end. Just in Nelson Mandela Bay, 57 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol since Friday.
Traffic volumes picked up sharply in Eastern Cape today as people returned home after the Easter Weekend.
