'Huge change for Australians': King Charles III to appear on new coins facing left

Assistant Minister for Treasury Andrew Leigh says it’ll be a huge change for Australians to have the King’s face for the first time on decimal coins.

Australians can expect to see King Charles III on coins within the next year as the transfer begins to introduce new money with a new monarch, however, he will be facing left, opposite to the direction Queen Elizabeth II faced.

“Every time the monarch changes then the direction in which they face changes,” Mr Leigh told Sky News Australia.

“It is an extraordinary change for Australia.

“Since we started decimal currency in 1966, the Queen has always been on the coins, some 15 billion Australian coins have been minted with the Queen’s face on them.”
