
The United Nations is commemorating the first International Day for Countering Hate Speech today – the 18th of June.
Research shows social media is amplifying hate speech especially because of the anonymity of social media platforms, where one can hide behind the keyboard and say anything.
In Kenya, where political campaigns have reached fever pitch ahead of the General elections in August, social media platforms are rife with hate, incitement to violence and all manner of falsehoods as politicians try to outdo each other in search of votes.
SABC news correspondent, Sarah Kimani, spoke to various people to understand the role of social media in political campaigns but also in spreading hate.
