The Northern Cape department of Arts and Culture says despite the underutilization of public libraries, it has no intention of closing any.
Instead, it aims to build more in the coming decade.
World Book Day was celebrated around the world on Saturday and the department says its is hoping to instill a reading culture within the various communities in the province.
The department is also concerned about the high number of thefts and vandalism at public libraries.
