Life Esidimeni | Families of victims say government has learnt nothing from the catastrophe

Families of mental healthcare patients who died in the Life Esidimeni Tragedy say government has learnt nothing from the catastrophe. Hospitals, including Helen Joseph and Chris Hani Baragwanath, have been buckling since last April, when parts of the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, including the psychiatric ward, were gutted by fire. There are not enough beds to accommodate mental healthcare patients and concerns have been raised that a repeat of the 2016 saga is not far off. 144 patients died of hunger and dehydration after they were transferred to unlawful NGO’s.
