ANC Leadership Race I Prof. Barry Hanyane looks at ANC's road to its elective conference in December

This year 2022 could be another watershed for the ANC as the governing party heads to an elective conference in December. Several provincial leaders have already announced their support for President Cyril Ramaphosa to stand for another term. But there may still be machinations to offer alternatives.

The City Press is reporting today that there might be an alliance brewing between Tourism Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu and former Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize. Both Sisulu and Mkhize are members of the National Executive Committee. Mkhize resigned from his cabinet post over the Digital Vibes Scandal. The SIU has since found that Mkhize, his family members and close associated benefitted from an irregular tender with that communications company.

Suspended secretary general Ace Magashule has also been seen as a contender in the race to be at the helm of the ANC, but he is currently subject to the step aside rule as he faces charges in connection with an asbestos roofing project in the Free State while he was premier of the province. To discuss we are joined by political analyst, Professor Barry Hanyane.
