Formula One is returning to Africa, but not to South Africa. Rwanda has secured a ten-year agreement to host a future Grand Prix, leaving questions about Kyalami, South Africa’s unsuccessful bid and whether the country has missed its opportunity. Gareth Edwards speaks to Formula One and motoring analyst Sasha Martinengo about what Rwanda did differently, the importance of government guarantees and the business decisions behind one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
Could South Africa still secure a place on the Formula One calendar? Gareth and Sasha examine what it would take to bring Kyalami up to standard, the spectator numbers and financial commitments involved, and a possible alternative in the Western Cape. They also explore South Africa’s motorsport heritage and the local engineers and drivers already making their mark internationally. Beyond the excitement of hosting a Grand Prix lies a much bigger question: can South Africa turn its Formula One ambitions into a credible, sustainable investment?
