eNCA News Bite | NSFAS R5.1bn funding probe, Westbury gang violence and Kolisi injury doubt | 18 ...

It’s Tuesday, 18 August and this is News Bite with Marcelle Gordon.

NSFAS is under fresh scrutiny after a Public Protector investigation found more than 40,000 students were improperly funded by about R5.1-billion (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories/40000-students-improperly-received-nsfas-funding-report) across 76 institutions. Kholeka Gcaleka says the evidence points to possible systemic maladministration.

In Westbury, four young men, the youngest 15, were killed over the weekend and a fifth survived. Families say there is no political will to stop the gang violence (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories-videos/we-cant-lose-our-children-westbury-families-demand-action-gang-violence) , while community leaders warn high-calibre weapons are increasingly being used.

Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee will begin its gang-violence inquiry (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories-videos/cape-town-gang-violence-parliaments-sights-inquiry-gets-under-way) with a summit bringing together victims, community groups and anti-gang activists. The committee has also been hosted by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

The Police Ad Hoc Committee is refining an 800-page draft report, with possible perjury charges (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories-videos/perjury-charges-table-police-ad-hoc-committee-finalises-report) under discussion over alleged false testimony by Mary de Haas and Cedric Nkabinde. Parties have formalised submissions around the Political Killings Task Team controversy.

Political analyst Sipho Seepe has criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa’s xenophobia apology (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories/tell-your-friends-when-theyre-wrong-analyst-slams-ramaphosas-xenophobia-apology) at the SADC Summit in Durban. Ramaphosa said regional leaders discussed South Africa’s migration challenges behind closed doors, while Seepe argued neighbouring countries also needed to be challenged. In Las Vegas, the Tupac Shakur murder trial (https://www.enca.com/lifestyle-news/tupac-shakurs-accused-killer-was-out-revenge-jury-hears) is underway nearly three decades after he was killed. Former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis is charged with his murder.

In other news we’re keeping an eye on, Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 33% in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll. Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s Madlanga Commission testimony (https://www.enca.com/news-top-stories/watch-madlanga-zooms-mswazi-msibi-text-messages) has been postponed to next week.
