Roughly four years is today’s Number of the Day. South Africa’s official unemployment rate rose to 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026, its highest level since 2022. The number of unemployed people increased to about 8.5 million, while another 329,000 people entered the labour force. Youth unemployment also climbed to 47.4%.
Gareth Edwards and Francis Herd move beyond the percentage to ask why the economy cannot create jobs quickly enough for the people who need them. They examine discouraged jobseekers, the pressure on young South Africans entering the workforce and the connection between weak growth and broken economic infrastructure.
