CheckPoint Podcast | Should SA prepare for more political killings? | 14 July 2026

What happens when local political office becomes a route to money, influence and public contracts?

In this episode of CheckPoint: The Podcast, Nkepile Mabuse sits down with Bheki Stofile, President of the South African Local Government Association, for a stark conversation about political killings and the growing danger surrounding municipal power.

Stofile says the threat facing councillors is not new. SALGA began raising alarms years ago as killings spread across local government and began affecting municipal officials, traditional leaders and others involved in public decision-making.

Nkepile presses him on what is driving the violence. Stofile points to conflict inside political parties, financial interests, access to municipal resources and criminal networks that see councillors as obstacles to lucrative opportunities.

He also questions why ministers receive immediate protection while mayors and councillors must first prove that they are at risk, despite making decisions involving millions or billions of rand.

The conversation moves through coalition governments, municipal funding, voter accountability, public participation, police responses and intelligence failures.

As South Africa approaches the next municipal elections, Nkepile asks the most urgent question of the episode: should the country prepare for more deaths?
