130 is today’s Number of the Day.
It has been 130 days since the US and Israel first struck Iran, and the conflict that appeared to be cooling has suddenly flared again.
Gareth Edwards and Aakash Bramdeo unpack why renewed US strikes against Iran matter far beyond the Middle East. Aakash explains that since the first strikes on 28 February 2026, the war has moved through moments of escalation, ceasefire hope and renewed uncertainty.
Now, with the US striking Iran again after reported attacks around the Strait of Hormuz, oil markets are reacting.
That is where the story becomes deeply relevant for South Africans.
Aakash explains that oil moved from around $70 a barrel earlier in July toward $80, and warns that if the conflict continues, or if the Strait of Hormuz is blockaded or closed, oil could move back above $100 or even toward $120.
For South Africans, that could mean renewed pressure on petrol, diesel, food inflation and possibly interest rates.
The biggest local warning is diesel. South Africa imports more refined fuel than it used to, and diesel runs through trucks, agriculture, logistics and supply chains.
The episode ends with the bigger question: if Iran’s nuclear programme was the original concern, and regime change now looks unlikely, what is America’s endgame?
130 days. Oil is moving again. And a diesel warning South Africans cannot ignore.
