That is the headline figure behind a warning every working South African with a pension deduction should take seriously.
Gareth Edwards and Aakash Bramdeo unpack the growing concern around employers who deduct retirement fund contributions from workers’ salaries but do not pay that money over to the relevant pension funds.
The figure comes from the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, which has published a list of employers reported to be in arrears. The FSCA says total arrears are estimated at R8.33 billion, affecting approximately 590 000 retirement fund members.
