Number Of The Day | 0.5% | 9 June 2026

0.5% is today’s Number of the Day.

South Africa’s economy grew by 0.5% in the first quarter of 2026. That sounds like good news, and it is. But Gareth Edwards and Francis Herd look beyond the headline to ask what this number really means for South Africans.

Francis explains why a small quarterly GDP gain matters after years of weak growth, especially when the economy has often expanded more slowly than the population. She also breaks down what is helping the economy move, from improved electricity supply and Transnet performance to stronger sentiment and renewable energy investment coming online.

But the number carries a warning.

Growth is still not strong enough to make a serious dent in unemployment. Retail growth was flat, households remain under pressure, and fixed investment fell by more than 1%, which raises questions about future job creation.

0.5% is better than stagnation.

The real question is whether South Africa can turn modest growth into real momentum for households, businesses and people looking for work.
