SA Explained | Joe 'Ferrari' case struck off the roll | 21 May 2026

A case being struck off the roll can sound final. In law, it is often more complicated.

Nqaba Songezo Mabece examines the Joe Ferrari Sibanyoni matter after it was struck off the roll during bail-related proceedings linked to serious charges, including money laundering and extortion. He explains why the decision does not mean the accused have been cleared, but rather that the state could not proceed at that moment.

The episode follows the procedural chain that led to the decision: a prosecutor who indicated he would not be available, a magistrate who still ordered him to attend, and a court process that then escalated into questions around contempt of court and a warrant of arrest.

Nqaba also asks whether the NPA could have handled the moment differently. Could another prosecutor have stepped in? Was the magistrate’s approach even-handed? And what does this do to public trust when a major case stops because of procedure?

The case may be off the roll, but the questions are very much alive.
