Treasury demands Eskom to write off R70 billion in outstanding municipal debt

The National Treasury is reportedly demanding that Eskom write off some R70 billion in outstanding municipal debts as part of the government taking over a part of the utility’s debt. An Afrikaans-language weekly newspaper, Rapport reports that municipalities will have to commit themselves to cut off non-paying electricity users if they wish to qualify for the write-off. As part of this, they must maintain an 80% electricity revenue collection rate, table a reasonable budget, and regularly pay their Eskom bills. For more on this we’re now virtually by Rapport journalist Antoinette Slabbert and Afriforum head of local government MornĂ© Moster.
