The National Treasury is reportedly demanding that Eskom write off some R70 billion in outstanding municipal debts as part of the government taking over a part of the utility’s debt. An Afrikaans-language weekly newspaper, Rapport reports that municipalities will have to commit themselves to cut off non-paying electricity users if they wish to qualify for the write-off.
