Residents of villages in the Niani area outside Musina in Limpopo have begun paving the D3917 road between Dambale and Manenzhe on their own.
The 13-kilometre gravel road, which is a link between several villages, has been a problem for years, adversely affecting economic activities and key services.
Community members are buying the building materials from their own pockets while some are donated by local business people.
