Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood says the federal budget forecasts that gas and electricity prices will rise sharply for the next two years.
He said the price increase will compromise household budgets and business that relies on “cheap energy for their competitiveness”.
“The pressure on inflation from those higher energy prices is already emerging – as Treasurer Jim Chalmers noted in his National Press Club address today,” Mr Greenwood said.
