Labor to crack down on nation's top polluters

The federal government is calling on the nation’s top polluters to cut their carbon emissions by six per cent yearly, as it strives to reach its legislated 43 per cent emissions reduction target by 2030.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen is looking to enforce a largely disregarded safeguard mechanism, which would force the top 215 polluters in Australia to offset emissions by purchasing carbon credits if they pass the mechanism’s baseline.
