Xiao’s speech was to ‘put pressure’ on govt to reset China relations

UNSW Emeritus Professor of Politics Carl Thayer says Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian’s address to the National Press Club on Wednesday was “a silver-tongued diplomat extending an iron fist covered with a glove”.

“This one is here to promote the use of public information, media, warfare, psychological warfare and legal warfare to convince Australia it’s about time for a reset,” Professor Thayer told Sky News Australia.

“And to encourage those elements inside Australia that benefit from this relationship … and put pressure on the government to get on with resetting relations with China.”
