
More than 350 people lost their lives in the July 2021 unrest. Most of the deaths were recorded in KwaZulu-Natal. In Gauteng there were 90 deaths. A family in Soweto, who lost a loved one in a stampede during the looting, blames government for creating an enabling environment for desperation, driven by poverty.
