Youth Day I Call on government to provide quality education to decrease youth unemployment: Amnesty

Amnesty International has called on government to provide quality education in a safe environment if it wants to decrease youth unemployment. A recent report by Statistics South Africa, shows for the first quarter of 2022, the unemployment rate was 63.9% for those aged between 15-24 and 42.1% for those aged 25-34 years. Youth unemployment has been proclaimed a national crisis, with statistics placing the country at the top of a global list of 82 last year. The human rights group says the country’s education system is still plagued by the legacy of apartheid and children from impoverished communities continue to bear the brunt of governments failed promises. For more on this report we are now joined by Amnesty International South Africa, Executive director, Shenilla Mohamed.
