As South Africa observes youth month, we reflect on the lived experiences of Africa’s largest demographic and the challenges they face and what opportunities exist. South Africa’s unemployment rate eased to 34.5% in the first quarter of 2022, the first decline in seven quarters. The youth unemployment rate, measuring job-seekers between 15 and 24 years old, fell to 63.9% in the first quarter of 2022, the lowest in a year, from a record high of 63.5% in the last quarter. A staggering figure by all accounts, leaving the big question: what can the youth looking to be employed to do?
