
Many have argued that South Africa needs a permanent basic income grant for the poor. The Social Relief of distress grant of R350 introduced during Covid-19 is a temporary measure although it has been extended several times. On the other hand A new report released by the Centre for Development and Enterprise is an argument against a Basic Income Grant.
The CDE’s report titled "Poverty and a Basic Income Grant", reveals that South Africa cannot afford a basic income grant. To discuss we’re joined by Ann Bernstein who is the Executive Director of the Centre for Development and Enterprise.
