
A recent study found that 20% of farmers will exit the industry within the next decade. This comes amid high unemployment rates in the country, with a sluggish economy adding to national woes. In his State of the Nation speech earlier this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa said more investment would be ploughed into the farming sector as the sector could help significantly with increasing jobs. But with many farmers giving up or consolidating with mega farming consortiums, the future for farmers in the country is looking grim.
