Joburg Energy Indaba | City of Johannesburg hosts energy indaba: Chris Yelland

City Power says it will need a cash injection of around R26 billion to address the issue of ageing infrastructure and diversify its energy mix. Currently, the power distributor relies on Eskom for 90% of its energy. But it now wants to reduce its dependence by producing 30 percent of power by way of independent power producers. Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dr Mpho Phalatse says the city of Johannesburg can’t be left behind while the world pursues clean energy sources. Phalatse was speaking during the City’s inaugural Energy Indaba held in Sandton. The City hopes the move will help provide cheaper and greener energy, especially with the potential for tariff increases on the cards. Energy analyst Chris Yelland joins us for more.
