
Farm workers’ organisation The Ubuntu Rural and Youth Movement says according to Sectoral Determination in the agriculture sector, children from the age of 16 years are allowed to work on farms.
This while the Constitution considers a person under the age of 18 to be a child.
A labour expert says that up to 70% of all children in child labour in South Africa are on farms. The 5th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour in Durban ended yesterday, the International Labour Organisation says all relevant stakeholders including government, business, and civil society have contributed recommendations towards the Durban Call to Action document, general public has also been called upon to play their role by reporting incidents of child labour, while the children also made their voices heard.
