
The Western Cape is beefing up its fire prevention, education and fire fighting efforts as the winter season approaches. This comes after the recent fires in Langa and other townships which destroyed many shacks and left about a thousand people homeless. Western Cape officials say the concern has shifted from veld fires to domestic fires in informal settlements due the use of open fires and parafin to cook and keep warm in winter.
