Zimbabwe says it is making inroads in the fight against corruption

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission says it’s making inroads in the fight against graft. That’s despite criticism over its lack of conviction of high profile cases involving high ranking government officials.

In 2021, the body only managed four convictions.

Although Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared zero tolerance for corruption under his watch when he was inaugurated in 2018, the scourge of corruption has continued to thrive, with the First Family and high-level government officials also being implicated in shady deals.

Mnangagwa’s poor record in combating corruption has also been attributed to investors repelling and shunning the country.

A recent report has placed Zimbabwe 159th out of 180 on the Transparency International index and the country has so far failed to recover most proceeds of corrupt activities.
