Dirco to challenge court decision that has interdicted donation to Cuba

Last week, we reported that the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) is preparing itself to return to the court over the decision of the High Court in Pretoria that interdicted the government’s donation to Cuba. This followed the court outcome which granted lobby group AfriForum an urgent interdict against the department’s plan to make the donation. In Parliament, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Thandi Modise -responding to a written question from the DA – then revealed that South Africa has spent about R359 million in SANDF military training in Cuba since 2014. But just what is the nature of the intended donation, and the general relations between the two countries?
