The plastics economy, is corporate South Africa doing enough to promote recycling? If we consider that 1 739 500 tons of plastic was produced in 2020 with only 312 600 tons of this is recycled into raw materials, there is no doubt that a huge job needs to be done when it comes to plastics recycling.
Things like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) are forming a critical component to recycling, particularly in the plastics space – where packaging accounts for 52% of the local market – and so there is no doubt that while government is driving this agenda, plastic producers have a fundamental role to play.
