The Russia-Ukraine conflict is set to worsen the lot for local farmers. The two countries are major exporters of fertilizers, with Russia having the larger share. They’re also both major exporters of wheat and sunflower oil, among other agricultural goods. The international prices of all these goods have shot up after the invasion. Ukraine has stopped exporting fertilizer and other agricultural goods to safeguard its own food security. South Africa’s agricultural sector now faces higher prices.
