The Western Cape department of Community Safety says the provincial Forensic Science Laboratory should report to the province’s police commissioner.
This in a bid to address backlogs which impact criminal investigations and prosecutions.
Department officials have briefed the provincial Standing Committee on its latest Policing Needs and Priorities Report.
It says under-resourced police stations and under-trained detectives, remain among the challenges on effective policing in the province.
