The Gauteng government has placed nine senior officials in the Departments of Health and Infrastructure Development on precautionary suspension.
This follows the recommendation of the Special Investigating Unit.
The SIU uncovered serious irregularities in the awarding of contractors for the refurbishment of the Anglo Gold Ashanti Hospital on the West Rand. In December 2021, the SIU made referrals to the provincial government to institute disciplinary action against senior managers who were implicated in irregularities in the awarding of contractors for the refurbishment of the hospital.
It was one of the facilities earmarked for the treatment of COVID-19.
