UN SG expresses deep concern about news of heavy fighting in Guinea Bissau

The United Nations Secretary General has expressed deep concern about news of heavy fighting in Guinea Bissau as west African bloc ECOWAS swiftly condemning what it called a coup attempt. Reports of heavy gunfire near the presidential palace emerged earlier from Bissau – the capital of the West African nation. A cabinet meeting was reportedly underway at the presidential precinct, but it was not immediately clear who was firing the gunshots. UN Chief Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate end to the fighting and for the full respect of the country’s democratic institutions.
