Air France has suspended flights to Mali because of security risks in the West African nation following sweeping new sanctions and border closures imposed by regional bloc, ECOWAS. ECOWAS imposed the measures over the interim authority’s failure in Mali to hold democratic elections next month as agreed after a 2020 military coup. Mali’s neighbours have closed their road and air borders, prompting regional airlines to halt flights to the capital Bamako. Mali’s interim government has condemned the latest sanctions as illegitimate and has urged citizens to remain calm. Leanne De Bassompierre is a News Correspondent based in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
