The recent outbreak of violence in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng has worsened the conditions of some poverty-stricken residents in these areas. Social Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu, has told the National Assembly that some of the gains made to improve lives in vulnerable communities have been reversed by the recent violence. She says her department has requested additional funding from the Solidarity Fund to address food shortages. This as August 2021 data shows that all baskets increased and that all baskets are now at the highest level since tracking started in September 2020. According to the Household Food Basket survey that forms part of the Household Affordability Index created by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group, massive food-price spikes hit the poor in August 2021 household food baskets for Johannesburg, Durban, and Pietermaritzburg, where most of the rioting happened.
