The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has proclaimed and gazetted the 27th of October as the date for the Local Government Elections. This is until the IEC requests the Constitutional Court for a postponement of elections. By law, the Minister is bound to fulfill her constitutional and statutory obligations to timeously proclaim the election date. This follows the IEC’s acceptance of the recommendations of Justice Dikgang Moseneke’s Inquiry that the local government elections be postponed from the 27th of October to February next year. Meanwhile, in a statement, the IEC has acknowledged the proclamation of the elections.
